2009 Dimon Distinguished Community Schools in Illinois Award
The Federation is very pleased to announce the second annual Dimon Distinguished Community Schools in Illinois Award. The Dimon Award recognizes the entire community school effort in this state while focusing attention on ten stellar community schools that have exhibited excellence in the development, implementation, and proven outcomes of a community school.
Who is eligible?
The Federation encourages community schools around the state to apply for this award. The Federation recognizes that there are many schools in Illinois who are engaged in the outcomes, guiding principles and basic structure, but do not yet call themselves community schools. The Federation urges all schools serving as community schools, with or without the name, to apply for this award. Please also note:
- Community Schools that were awarded in the 2008 award cycle will not be considered for this (2009) award cycle.
- Only one school per “lead” partner agency (for community schools that use the lead partner model) will be awarded.
Who should apply?
The application can be submitted by either the school or the lead partner organization, but it should be done collaboratively between the school and program director/resource coordinator.
What is the deadline for applying?
All applications must be submitted by 5:00pm on Friday, May 1, 2009
Your application should be completed electronically and sent as an email attachment to:

Federal Funding Opportunities for Community Schools
Use Title I Dollars to Support Community Schools
In the Federal Economic Recovery plan, Illinois will receive approximately $526.3 million over the next two years supporting increased Title I funding under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The Federation encourages schools and school districts to use their increased Title I funds to support implementing the community school model because it is a proven model that works. Visit our Advocacy and Action page to learn more.
State Fiscal Stabilization Fund
The State Fiscal Stabilization Fund (SFSF) program is a new one-time appropriation of $53.6 billion under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). Of this amount, the US Department of Education will award governors approximately $48.6 billion by formula under the SFSF program in exchange for a commitment to advance essential education reforms to benefit student, including: college- and career- ready standards and high-quality, valid and reliable assessments for all students, and turning around the lowest-performing schools.
Edward Byrne Competitive Grants
$225 million is listed in the Recovery Act, with some set aside for Youth Mentoring Programs, Crime Reduction Initiatives, Research and Evaluation Projects. Each grant has specific guidelines and submission deadlines so review the Grant Overview and website links included in the overview carefully.
