In 2006, the Federation for Community Schools was born out of the vision of the Chicago Campaign to Expand Community Schools and the Chicago Coalition for Community Schools in order to share best practices and advocate for community schools in Illinois.

Today the Federation represents nearly 200 community schools and 100 partner organizations in Illinois through its 1300+ members who engage with us to support the advancement of community schools. We have developed a vibrant professional learning community for our members by providing trainings and resources that increase their capacity to implement the community school strategy so as to best support students and families.

Take a look back at our history .

The Federation for Community Schools amplifies the voice and abilities of community schools in Illinois .  The work of the Federation is to:

  • Connect : Connecting schools with partner organizations to strengthen their collective impact. This results in programs before and after the typical school day to enrich and encourage social, emotional and academic growth, and to develop the whole child.
  • Develop :  Facilitating professional development and the sharing of best practices to help implement and strengthen the community school model. Through workshops and other learning opportunities, community schools can build on past successes and learn from the collective group.
  • Champion :  Advocating in support of the community school model, reaching out to policymakers, educators and the public about the tangible benefits of its implementation. This results in increased visibility and attention to issues that directly affect community schools.
